Contact Lens Examination
What Is a Contact Lens Examination?
A contact lens examination is a specialised assessment performed in addition to a comprehensive eye examination. While a routine eye exam evaluates your vision and overall eye health, a contact lens exam determines whether contact lenses are suitable for your eyes and identifies the safest, most comfortable lens option for your individual needs.
Why Is a Contact Lens Examination Necessary?
Contact lenses are medical devices that sit directly on the surface of the eye. For this reason, they require precise fitting and careful evaluation to ensure optimal vision, comfort, and long-term eye health.
During your contact lens examination, your optometrist will perform a series of measurements and assessments, which may include:
- Evaluation of your prescription and visual requirements
- Measurement of the curvature and shape of your cornea
- Assessment of pupil size and eyelid anatomy
- Evaluation of your tear film and ocular surface health
- Examination of the front surface of the eye to identify any conditions that may affect lens wear
These measurements help determine the most appropriate contact lens design, material, size, and wearing schedule for your eyes.
Contact Lens Prescription vs. Spectacle Prescription
A spectacle prescription cannot be used as a contact lens prescription. Although both are designed to correct vision, they are calculated differently.
Spectacle lenses sit approximately 12–14 millimetres away from the eye, while contact lenses rest directly on the tear film covering the cornea. As a result, additional measurements are required to ensure accurate vision correction, proper fit, and healthy lens wear.
An incorrectly fitted contact lens can lead to discomfort, reduced vision, corneal complications, and an increased risk of eye infections.
Choosing the Right Contact Lenses
Today’s contact lens technology offers a wide range of options to suit different lifestyles and visual needs. Depending on your prescription and eye health, your optometrist may recommend:
- Daily disposable contact lenses
- Fortnightly or monthly replacement lenses
- Multifocal contact lenses for presbyopia
- Toric lenses for astigmatism
- Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses
- Scleral contact lenses for complex corneal conditions
- Cosmetic or coloured contact lenses
Your optometrist will discuss the advantages of each option and recommend the most suitable solution based on your individual requirements.
Trial Lenses and Follow-Up Care
Once the appropriate lenses have been selected, you will typically be fitted with trial contact lenses. This allows your optometrist to assess the fit, movement, comfort, and visual performance of the lenses on your eyes.
You may be asked to wear the lenses for a trial period before returning for a follow-up assessment. During this visit, your optometrist will evaluate how your eyes are responding to the lenses and make any necessary adjustments to ensure optimal comfort, vision, and ocular health.
Ongoing Contact Lens Care
Regular follow-up examinations are an essential part of successful contact lens wear. Even when your vision feels stable and your lenses remain comfortable, routine reviews help monitor eye health, ensure continued lens suitability, and detect any early signs of complications before they become significant problems.
At Gateway Optical Centre, our contact lens assessments combine advanced diagnostic technology with personalised care, ensuring every patient receives a safe, comfortable, and individually tailored contact lens solution.
